Persian manuscript on paper, 2 lines of nasta'liq in black ink on a marbled ground, the reverse plain


leaf: 18 by 25.2cm. 

On loan at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University.

inscriptions:

bar dargahat ey sepehr-jah amadeh am

dar sayeh-at az bahr-e panah amadeh am

‘O one of celestial status, I have come to your court,


Under your shade I have come for protection’

It is possible that the scribe of the present couplet is 'Ibadullah Hafiz, son of 'Abdullah Bayg and student of Amir Razavi.


He was a scribe at the court of the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah II (1837-58) and subsequently joined the court of the Raja of Patiala after Bahadur Shah II's deposition (Mehdi Bayani, ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol. II, Tehran, 1346 sh., p. 339).
