FIRST EDITION, folio (276 x 180mm.), 7 letterpress tables (6 folding, one double-page), 5 (of 7) engraved plates (4 folding), further illustrations in the text, woodcut printer's device on final verso, eighteenth-century half calf over marbled boards, lacking engraved frontispiece and 2 engraved plates, some damp-staining, some repairs to plates


Barry was an Irish soldier serving in the Spanish army in the Netherlands; he took part in the siege of Breda in 1624-1625 and subsequently translated Hugo's work on the siege into English (see lot 247). This work covers various aspects of military activity, including fortifications and modern battle formations as well as fireworks.
