Two works in a binding for de Thou, comprising:


i. Basta, Giorgio. Il mastro di campo generale. Venice: Giovanni Battista Ciotti, 1606, woodcut device on title-page, woodcut initials, with blank leaf a6

ii. Fiammelli, Giovanni Francesco. Modo di ben mettere in ordinanza gli eserciti con una giunta di alcune cose attinenti alli governi di stati e di eserciti. Rome: Luigi Zannetti, 1603, woodcut device on title-page in red and black, typographic diagrams

2 works in one volume, 4to (222 x 160mm.), contemporary brown calf gilt with the arms of Jacques-Auguste de Thou and his wife Gasparde de La Chastre on covers [Olivier 216 fer 8] and their IAG monogram [Olivier 216 fer 9] in spine compartments, de Thou shelf-mark in ink at head of upper cover and on inside front cover ("E 117"), lower cover slightly scraped


Giorgio Basta (1544-1607), an Italian of Albanian origin, served in the Spanish army in the Low Countries before becoming a commander in the Austrian army, fighting against the Ottomans in Hungary. See lot 78 for the 1616 French edition.
