Roughly hewn in a minimalist yet striking design, this piece is a remarkably fine example of northern Wei Buddhist stone carving. With one hand resting on their knees, the other - now lost - presumably once raised in reassurance, the figures sit in padmāsana. With serene expressions and abstracted flowing robes, the present figures bear a strong resemblance to seated figures and relief carvings found in the Tianlongshan grottoes in Shanxi Province, illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji: Diaosu [Complete Series of Chinese Art: Sculpture], vol. 13, Beijing, 1989, pp. 81-91. Compare also a gilt bronze stele of a sitting buddha with a similar expression in the collection of the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Saburo Matsubara, Chūgoku bukkyō chōkokushi ron [Historical discussion of Chinese Buddhist sculpture], Tokyo, 1995, vol. 1, pl. 58a.
