The Lazar collection includes a group of these large Preclassic figures (see lots 15 and 22), each expressive and imposing in their details. This female has highly sculpted facial features and a gently contoured torso with the diagnostic short arms, here held straight out with small hands flexed. Her domed and dominant headdress is modeled with the recessed design suggestive of the “Displayed Deity” emblem and iconography of sprouting elements.

For discussion of these important Preclassic figures see Douglas E. Bradley and Peter David Joralemon, The Lords of Life: The Iconography of Power and Fertility in Preclassic Mesoamerica, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1992, passim.
