This composition faithfully follows a popular design by Joos van Cleve which, given its small size, must have been originally intended for private devotion.1 The tender figural grouping, however, ultimately has compositional roots in Gerard David's Rest on the Flight into Egypt in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P002643).
