Description
Circle of Jan Brueghel the Younger
A concert of birds, or an allegory of sound
oil on canvas
canvas: 7½ by 9¾ in.; 19.1 by 24.8 cm.
framed: 19 by 21¼ in.; 49.3 by 54 cm.
This composition probably derives from a lost prototype by Jan Brueghel the Elder, and the numerous copies and variations known attest to its popularity. While some versions are attributed to Jan van Kessel and Ferdinand van Kessel, the present iteration comes closest to those known by Jan Brueghel the Younger.1
