By whom sold ("Property of the Hon. Mrs. de Beaumont...Exhibited at the Towneley Art Gallery for about Fifteen Years,"), London, Christie's, 3 December 1926, lot 19, to Knoedler (as "Brueghel").
This small copper takes as its precedent a larger panel by Hendrick van Balen the Elder and Abraham Govaerts.1 Hendrick van Balen's primacy for the figural group is recorded in his drawing today in the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven.2 Although Klaus Ertz traditionally attributed the landscape to Jan Brueghel the Younger, both Bettina Werche and Ursula Harting have more recently attributed it to Govaerts.3 The present composition proved very popular within Hendrick van Balen's workshop and among his following, and several other versions are known. For example, a fragment of this composition is attributed to Jan Brueghel the Younger and Jan van Balen.4
