Description

GOYA Y LUCIENTES, FRANCISCO JOSÉ DE

Los desastres de la guerra. Colección de ochenta láminas inventadas y grabadas al agua fuerte. Madrid, 1892

oblong 4to (235 x 335mm.), second edition, containing the complete series of 80 aquatint engravings, all plates on guards, printed title-page and leaf of text about Goya, nineteenth-century quarter cloth, very light scattered spotting and browning to some leaves, covers worn, three tiny holes to spine

Goya's great series of engravings depicting the horrors of the guerilla war against Napoleon in Spain were created between 1810 and 1820 but first published in 1853. With their stark power these wonderful images represent the apogee of Goya's achievement in the field of engraving.
