Anonymous sale, Paris, Hotel Drouot, 31 March 1955, lot 33 (as Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp);
With Richard Green, Ltd., London by 1995;
From whom acquired by George Sarlo, San Francisco.
Painted in 1633, this portrait of a young boy, attributed to Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, presents a child, identified as three years old in the inscription at upper right, in the formal idiom of Dordrecht portraiture. His stiff, lustrous green satin costume, lace apron, and ruff signal status while the sprig of berries and obedient dog introduce a note of youthful playfulness. The tiled floor, table covering, and controlled lighting reflect Cuyp’s characteristic clarity and restraint, and his careful modeling of fabric and flesh situates the work within the refined domestic portrait tradition of the era.
