The present figure was created among a large set of sculptures comprising the entire retinue of the Medicine Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru (Tib. Sanggye Mela). For an example of a nearly-complete mandala of the same type, see Rhie and Thurman, Wisdom and Compassion, 1991, p. 228, cat. 134.
