Description

Four paintings from a series depicting various episodes from the Bhagavata Purana, mainly from Book 10 which recounts the birth and early exploits of Krishna, the cowherd God and ninth avatar of Vishnu. The illustrations as follows:

Folio 2: Brahma being venerated

Folio 3: Virtuous practices to be followed by a devotee, including praying to the sun, to fire, feeding Brahmins, feeding a cow, etc.

Folio 4: Krishna fluting, with his parents Vasudeva and Devaki seated on the right

Folio 5: Shiva being venerated with the river Ganga flowing from his hair


One painting from a series depicting episodes from the Ramayana which arrates the heroic journey of Prince Rama (the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu) to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. This illustration appears to depict Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and the monkey army arriving at Ayodhya. (5)
