Sun Yu-Li is a Chinese-born architect and artist based in Singapore. After moving to Singapore in 1981, he pursued a second career in visual arts and gained recognition for his large-scale sculptures which can be found in major public venues in the city. Sun’s works are underpinned by his concept of the “Universal Language,” which is informed by philosophical texts on architecture, and linguistics. HEAVEN AND EARTH (IV) articulates this concept through its form, which symbolises the harmonious co-existence of yin and yang. It ruminates the primordial notion of heaven as a circle and earth as a square. Here, these simple shapes hold deep spiritual and emotional significance.
In 1995, Sun founded Sculpture Square, Singapore’s first art space dedicated to three-dimensional art. He also founded Emily Hill Artist Village in 2005 and remains a core member. Sun has served as the National Arts Council’s Resources Panel Member and an Advisor to the Urban Redevelopment Authority for the Marina Bay Youth Olympic Park.
