height of largest 3 in.; diameter 24 1/2 in.

7.5 cm; 62.5 cm

Christie's New York, 21 January 1999, lot 534

These magnificent salvers would have been made for Archibald Kennedy, 12th Earl of Cassillis, and later 1st Marquess of Ailsa (1770-1846), who was born in New York City, almost certainly at his father's house at No.1 Broadway. He was made a Knight of the Thistle in 1820, and as a symbol of this order does not appear in their engraved coat of arms, the salvers may have been made prior to this date.

Interestingly , one of the 1st Marquess’s head chefs was a man called Henderson William Brand, who had also been chef to George IV, and is believed to have invented what is now known as A1 Steak Sauce for the king.
