First approved edition of the first Antarctic manual
This geomagnetic surveys of the Antarctic regions, produced by the Royal Society, was supplied to the Antarctic expedition 1839-43, which was led by Sir James Clark Ross. Ross's expedition greatly improved knowledge of geomagnetism in the South Seas, thus advancing the magnetic charts used by mariners engaged in foreign trade and exploration.
