At Cartier Paris this wristwatch design was referred to as the ‘Baignoire’ (bathtub) due to the shape of its case which resembles a roll-top bath. In England it was called the ‘Oval’. Launched in 1956, the Baignoire is an iconic Cartier wristwatch design. Famous owners of the Baignoire have included the actor James Garner, the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, and the singer Dame Shirley Bassey. In this London example of the model, the curvaceous form of the case is enhanced by the steep, yet soft inward chamfer of the bezel as it reaches towards the dial.
