In 1954, Charlotte Perriand designed a four-legged banquette for Jacques Martin's Tokyo home. The following year, the bench appeared in the Proposition d'une synthèse des arts exhibition organized by Charlotte Perriand at Tokyo's Takashimaya department stores. In 1956, Steph Simon began to publish a three-legged version, of which our example is one. In the early 1960s, the Musée National d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris commissioned copies for its exhibition spaces.
