An American in Paris (1951)

Exceptionally rare, this poster was designed for the first Italian release of An American in Paris in 1952. The 50s style design included a big nod to the film's eight Oscar wins, which the film had received by the time it was released in Italy.

This American musical comedy was directed by Vincente Minnelli. Alan Jay Lerner wrote the script, which was inspired by the 1928 jazz-influenced symphonic poem of the same name by George Gershwin, who composed the music. His brother Ira wrote the lyrics. The film stars include Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron in her film debut. Georges Guétary, and Nina Foch, the film is set in Paris, and was directed by The music is by George Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira, with additional music by Johnny Green and Saul Chaplin, the music directors. The film's story of three friends who struggle to find work in Paris, coupled with two of these friends falling in love with the same woman, is interspersed with dance routines choreographed by Gene Kelly and set to Gershwin's music.
