Description

Nikolai Gogol

Mirgorod. Povesti... chast pervaya (-vtoraya) [the first (-second) part]. St Petersburg: Press of the Department for Foreign Trade, 1835

2 volumes, 8vo (230 x 150mm.), half-titles, original printed blue wrappers, UNCUT, occasional light foxing or staining, spines creased, edges slightly frayed

RARE FIRST EDITION, though one of the tales was previously published in a journal in 1834. Gogol's four short stories on Ukrainian provincial life, "serving as a sequel to Evenings on a farm near Dikanka" (published 1832), were written between 1832 and 1834 while Gogol was supposed to be teaching medieval history in St Petersburg. The stories were appreciated by Pushkin but somewhat less by the literary establishment.
