The Adoration of the Shepherds

oil on panel, a tondo

unframed diameter: 75.3 cm.; 29⅝ in.

framed: 98 x 98 cm.; 38⅝ x 38⅝ in.

We are grateful to Dr Laurence Kanter for identifying this tondo as a work by Francesco Signorelli and for dating it to the 1530s. The painting was previously attributed to Tommaso Bernabei following a misunderstanding common until as recently as the 1990s, which confused Bernabei and Francesco Signorelli.1 Francesco Signorelli was the nephew and artistic heir to the more renowned Luca Signorelli.
