Description

Roman School, early 17th Century

Study of a Male Nude

red chalk heightened with white chalk

8 by 8 ¾ in.; 207 by 221 mm

Sale, Paris, Piasa, 27 March 2008, lot 8 (As Attributed to Ludovico Carracci);

With Stephen Ongpin Fine Art, London;

From whom acquired, 2011.

Though this vigorous red chalk study has previously been given to the Bolognese master, Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619), with the endorsement of Babette Bohn, the handling seems closer to an artist of the Roman school, in the orbit of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680).
