The Rest on the Flight into Egypt was a subject that Rottenhammer explored on several occasions throughout his career. A signed and slightly smaller version of this composition is today in the Gemäldegalerie Kassel (inv. no. 1749 ff).¹ Further versions, all with small differences, are in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich; the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden; and Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran; and another was sold in the Wente sale in Cologne, Lempertz, 28 May 1937, lot 128.
