"In the monograph in which this painting is reproduced the artist writes, 'The mound form seems to spin and cut through the space/blue wash. You almost feel the sharp edge of the axe (upon your fingers). I came upon a scattered collection of axe heads and other stone tools covered in debris when I was making this work. The pink oval protected within the dark form is foetus-like, the scar left in the bark of a tree when a shield or other implement has been cut out of the still-living tree. I am attracted to scar trees, middens, scatters of stone tools and other signs of Aboriginal occupation of the land, Cultural artefacts resonate with mark/breath of the artist. I feel this particularly strongly when I come across material culture from my area. Waanyi country extends across the Northern Territory border and defies white boundaries - the line of the map cuts through it." (ibid, p. 60)
