Franz Rösel von Rosenhoff was best known for his charming and often amusing paintings of animals. His skill as a painter of animals and landscapes earnt him a position at the court of Prince Karl Eusebius of Liechtenstein in 1673. Rosenhoff often chose to paint hares and rabbits; a fine example, similar to the present painting, can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.1
