Agricola, born in Regensburg in 1667, was a successful painter and engraver but is most celebrated for the detailed studies he made from nature. He was particularly renowned for his exquisite pictures of birds, generally executed in gouache; the present study of a Brambling is a beautiful example of the artist working in this medium.

Agricola travelled extensively in Italy and settled for a number of years in Naples. Many of his striking and meticulous studies can be found in museums, including Breslau, Kassel, Florence and Vienna.
