Originally trained as a goldsmith by his father, Jan Paul Gillemans the Elder later specialised as a still-life painter in Antwerp. He became a member of the local guild of St. Luke in 1647/8. In 1648 he married Paulina Uyt den Eeckhout and they had eight children of whom Jan Paul the Younger also became a still-life painter. The Elder's compositions show stylistic influences of works by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, who was working in Antwerp from around 1632 until circa 1660, and again from 1672 until his death.
