EDITIONES PRINCIPES. The philosophical tract called Pinax (painting or tablet), an allegorical description of the human life and condition, with its attendant virtues and temptations, is attributed here to the Cebes of Thebes mentioned by Plato; it is now considered a Hellenistic work from the second century. It was widely known and translated in the early modern world (influencing writers such as Milton and Quevedo) and here appears with three other educational tracts, indicating that it was designed as an aid to the study of Greek.
