“I have experienced a lot of darkness in my life, but the Heavens have given me this darkness so that I may understand the light. There is no darkness in this world, there is only light; it’s up to us whether we see it.”
Hsiao Chin's oeuvre after the 1990s puts much heavier emphasis on spiritual dialogue, which is inseparable from the ups and downs he experienced in his life: in 1990, Hsiao Chin's major turning point in his life brought him the realization of the meaning of life and eternity, from which had inspired his creation The Eternal Garden, Ascendance of Samantha, Passage Through The Great Threshold, and other classic series that reflect the artist's experience of life, his enlightenment that comes after the pain and grief subsided, and his journey to attain an undisturbed state of serenity that reflects from his oeuvre.
Transcending the Eternal Garden – 2 shows how the artist skillfully echoes his composition with the theme of the painting: it presents a conception of life. The snaking ribbons of vibrant colour make up a brilliant Milky Way, expressing the interrelatedness of the current moment and life’s beginning and end. The two rays of light rise from the bottom left corner of the painting, symbolizes the surging human power and the soul. The tight arrangement of the line one behind the other poses a reference to Hsiao Chin and his daughter, echoing to the surging of the soul, going beyond life, ascending to the vast paradise of the Eternal Garden. The flecks of colors evokes stars in a cluster, representing the great and miraculous power of creation.

The combination of bright red and red orange in this work is full of energy and hope. In 1990, Hsiao Chin created a landmark work - Light - Homage to Sublimation which symbolizes the artist's re-start on the journey of life and art, opening a new chapter of his artistic style. The abundant warm orange that dominates the canvas of Light - Homage to Sublimation symbolizes the ascending and transcending of life; Transcending the Eternal Garden – 2 presents the same bright and brilliant colors, which shows how the artist’s practice of using brilliant colors to convey the new meaning of life, and how the sublimation of the spirit has transcended life and death.
Transcending the Eternal Garden – 2 comes with important exhibition history. In July 2020, Hsiao Chin’s major retrospective “In my Beginning is my End” was held in Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre in Latvia. The exhibition showcased works from the permanent collection of Hsiao Chin and Mark Rothko, exploring the thoughts and artistic practices between the two artists, how to converse and exchange in the same era in the 1960s. In 2021, the current work was exhibited in “The Artist as Astronaut” solo exhibition at Song Museum in Beijing. Transcending the Eternal Garden – 2 is one of the largest works in The Eternal Garden series, adding uncompromising aesthetic and market value to the iconic work of the artist.
