Sherman's career began at the end of the 1970s with her most celebrated photographic series "Untitled Film Stills", which made her one of the world's most famous artists. In it - as in most of her works - she slips into various socially anchored female role patterns, plays with our viewing habits influenced by film and advertising and makes an important contribution to feminism and the debate on female identity.
The photograph presented here dates from 1995 and is assigned to the "Sex Pictures" series. This motif was first presented to the public in the same year in an exhibition at Metro Pictures in New York. The artist herself is not posing as usual, but the scene is described by two clothesless dolls in a setting of draped glossy fabrics, in this case framed by two lateral hands. One of the dolls looks masculine, the other ambiguously childish girl. The scenery is reminiscent of Surrealism and especially of Hans Bellmer's "Poupée". The works in this series were created as an alternative to the series that brought Cindy Sherman worldwide fame. But the self-dramatisation and masquerades of Sherman's other works are logically linked to this series, where Sherman once again denounces the sexualised view of women and the porn industry.
La carriera di Cindy Sherman è iniziata alla fine degli anni Settanta, con la sua serie fotografica più celebre, "Untitled Film Stills", che l'ha resa una delle artiste più famose al mondo. L'artista non si mostra in posa come al solito, ma la scena è descritta da due bambole senza vestiti in uno scenario di tessuti lucidi drappeggiati, in questo caso incorniciati da due mani laterali.
