Biography

Philip Jelley is Senior Vice President, Senior Specialist in the Valuations department at Sotheby’s. He joined Sotheby’s in 1980, and as a general appraiser, has traveled the world using his reputable ability for estimate accuracy and auction potential to determine the worth of property in private and corporate collections, trusts, and estates.

Philip has inventoried and valued the public collections of many of America’s stately homes and historic sites in addition to maintaining ongoing relationships with the family offices of many of America’s wealthiest families. His breadth of knowledge of the art market stems from over 37 years of experience in the field, broadened by a background as an antiques dealer, property solicitor, auctioneer and manager of a high-end reproduction furniture line. He has worked on a vast number of notable collections which have come to auction including the Estates of Johnny Cash, Katherine Hepburn, Bill Blass, Geoffrey Beene, Marlene Dietrich, Ambassador Pamela Harriman, Donald Judd, Bunny Mellon, Brooke Astor, and David Bowie as well as property from the Collections of Ted Turner, Gordon and Ann Getty, Rockefeller, and Morgan.

Philip received his undergraduate degree in Art History from Occidental College and has successfully completed the coursework and examination in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
