Catalogue Note

The composition is based on Élizabeth Vigeé Le Brun's self-portrait with her young daughter of 1779 (Louvre, Paris). This exceptional miniature, the composition of which Augustin had used previously in a portrait dated 1792,1 was greatly admired and copied by other artists. For a copy by Bourgeois, dated 1818, see Sotheby's, Geneva, 11 November 1981, lot 293. Augustin has depicted a view of Tivoli in the background.
