Arabic manuscript on paper, 275 plus 8 fly-leaves, 14 lines to the page, written in naskh script in black ink, ruled in gold and blue, verses separated by gold dots, polychrome and gold verse markers in the margins, surah headings in white thuluth against a gold ground within cartouches, 2 opening illuminated bifolia, in contemporaneous brown leather binding with gilt decoration with flap, in fitted box
This charming miniature Qur’an is remarkable in that it bears not only a date of completion (954 AH/1547-48 AD) but also the name of the scribe as ‘Ali al-Tabbakh al-Shirazi, which is a rare aspect in miniature Qur'ans. The high quality of the illumination throughout recalls the opening page of a Qur’an dated 930 AH/1524 AD now in the Istanbul University library, inv. no.A.6566, published in Derman 2010, p.40.
