"When a man realizes that he has two lives -an abstract one for his mind and a concrete one which is also for his mind- he ends up either like a mad-man, who, out of fear, hides one of his lives and plays the other as a role, or like the artist, who has no fear and who is willing to risk the both of them. Man has always attempted to double him-self as a means of attempting to know himself. The recognition of one's own image in a pool of water -like recognizing oneself in a mirror- was perhaps one of the first real hallucinations that man experienced"

Michelangelo Pistoletto (in Le ultime parole famose, Torino 1967)

The "real photographer" that Pistoletto referred to in the manuscript inscription on the back of the work is Paolo Mussat Sartor, the photographer from Turin, well known for his personal artistic research as a photographer and for his collaboration with several artists of that period, especially those of Arte Povera. The collaboration of Mussat Sartor with Pistoletto began in the late 1960's and consisted not only in the photographic documentation of Pistoletto's exhibitions and performances of those years, but also, above all, in the realization of the photographs that Pistoletto uses for his mirror paintings.

These photographs were taken under the direction of Pistoletto, during the Seventies, mostly in the studio of Paolo Mussat Sartor. On the back of several mirror paintings of the first half of the Seventies, Pistoletto precisely nominates Mussat Sartor as author of the photography used and refers to Mussat Sartor's contribution to the work in terms of "collaboration", an expression that refers to the principle of "creative collaboration" formulated by Pistoletto in his homonymous manifesto published on the occasion of the 1968 Biennale di Venezia.

In other cases Pistoletto writes, concerning his role in relation to the various people involved in the process of realization of the mirror paintings, as a "direct" operation: "The photograph of this painting was made by Mussat in his studio in Turin. Since I use serigraphy I do not work anymore in my studio but I use a variety of studios or equipped laboratories. And I use expert technicians, everyone in their field. I would say that mine is a direct operation” (Pistoletto, autographed text on the reverse of the mirror painting “Donna che fa la cacca”, 1973).

The work “Il Fotografo” however does not imply the "portrait" of a photographer or more specifically of Mussat Sartor. Starting from the first mirror paintings of 1962, Pistoletto mostly uses as subjects of his paintings families, acquaintances and friends, like artists who attend his studio.

Sometimes subjects are easily recognizable. Their names, however, are almost never mentioned in the titles of works, in which allusion is made, as in this case, to a generic "photographer", or for example, to a "Uomo appoggiato" (1966), or to a "Uomo che guarda un negativo" (1967), even though the names of photographers are known, as in the mentioned cases involving the gallerist Gian Enzo Sperone and the artist Alighiero Boetti.

The use of generic terms in the title of the works, together with the posture of the subjects, photographed in poses or every day and common gestures, almost universal, is due to the fact that these works, the mirror paintings, are not portraits in the traditional sense of the term, are not representations of a specific object, they are not the reproduction of a real object as seen through an ideal window, according to the pictorial tradition dating back to the Renaissance perspective.

Mirroring pictures are instead a new phenomenological device, capable of showing the logic of vision and representation, a device that overturns or reopens the same Renaissance perspective, questioned and closed by the artistic avant-gardes of the first half of the twentieth century.

What animates the mirror paintings is a pair of opposite polarities consisting of a part of the fixed photo image placed on the surface of the reflective steel plate, on the other by the moving and potentially infinite moving images produced by the reflections of the environment where the mirror is placed and by the people watching it. In the work “Il fotografo”, however, the phenomenological character of mirror paintings is further amplified by the subject: a photographer taken in the act of taking a photograph. In fact in front of this work, the viewer can see not only his own image reflected alongside a photographic reproduction, as it happens in front of any mirrored picture, but at the same time he sees himself as the subject of the photography that the photographer is about to shoot.

In the case of a photographic documentation of the work, to which Pistoletto refers explicitly in the last sentence on the reverse of the work ("Any photographic document of this framework will be inserted in specularity of the phenomena"), the spectator would be further involved in such process as a subject of the photography.

An additional level would then be generated if the viewer himself would be photographed in front of the picture in the act of photographing or if he had photographed himself reflecting in front of the picture, as often occur in professional photographs of the mirror paintings reproduced in magazines or catalogues of exhibitions, as in the famous picture taken by Ugo Mulas in front of the mirror painting “Donna nuda di schiena” (1966) during the exhibition Vitality of the Negative in Rome in 1970, or more often in the pictures of the mirror paintings taken by the visitors of museums and later spread through social media.

The photograph used to make the painting was exceptionally taken by Pistoletto himself, as the photographer Mussat Sartor became the subject of the photo on this occasion. From this photo, Pistoletto made two other works: “Donna con lampada”, in 1974, using only the image of the woman who in the original photo is next to the photographer with a photographic lamp in her hand; “Macchina fotografica” of 1975, in which in the mirror picture remains only the photographic apparatus that was at the centre of the original photo.

Pistoletto used a photographer as the subject of his mirror paintings in relatively few other occasions. In 1974 he took another picture of Paolo Mussat Sartor while he was taking a photograph, next to a model (“Ombrello, modella e fotografo”). In 1982 then he returned to use for other two mirror paintings, another photo of Mussat Sartor in the act of photographing. Always in 1974 he made four mirror paintings of different sizes and compositions, starting with two images of Antonia Mulas, wife of the famous photographer Ugo Mulas, photographed on a stool or on a staircase in the act of taking a photograph.

In 2007 he made “Ragazza che fotografa con un telefono cellular”, which was exhibited at the Pistoletto retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 2013, Michelangelo Pistoletto - Année 1, the Paradis sur Terre, that has been photographed and distributed on social media by the visitors of the exhibition, who photographed themselves and other visitors, reflected in the work together with the paintings of the Louvre room in which the mirror painting was exposed, in the act of being seen and photographed, thus infinitely multiplying the proliferation of reflections generated by photographic documentation of the work which Pistoletto referred to in his short inscription on the reverse of the work of 1975, although he could not yet foresee the technological and social forms that this dissemination would take in a few decades.
