Catalogue Note
This series of photographs were made by Lee Friedlander between 1979 and 1980. Madonna was then a 21 years-old unknown dancer who, just arrived in New York and responded to an advertisement seeking models to photograph.
The images then appeared in Playboy in 1985 following the success of her 1984 Like a Virgin album. The powerful look and the provocative poses already suggests the future international icon.
The five prints offered here are the actual prints submitted by Lee Friedlander to Playboy for the purpose of reproduction. The prints were formally de-accessionated by the magazine in 2003 and came to market first at auction.
