With a total of €2.7 million, the photography auction achieved its highest sale result for the last three years. This event, staged at the same time as Paris Photo, opened with the sale of a private European collection. American photographers garnered the highest prices in this first session, led by Irving Penn, whose works fetched six of the top ten prices.

Sotheby’s is thrilled to present at auction in Paris this November an exciting selection from a private European collection. The auction will take place during the annual photography fair Paris Photo with a selection of around 100 lots. Highlights from this collection includes several exceptional works by the photography legend Irving Penn, who is celebrated by many shows this year for the century of his birth.
The collection also includes works from different periods but with a common feeling of elegance, and personal interpretations of beauty, Horst P Horst with the ideal human body, Robert Mapplethorpe with the erotic flowers and the singular worlds of Helmut Newton and Araki.
There is also a diverse selection of American photography around Ansel Adams, Walker Evens, Robert Frank, William Eggleston and Lee Friedlander.
