Christian Zervos, Pablo Picasso, Œuvres de 1895 à 1906, vol. I, Paris, 1957, no. 140, illustrated p. 68
"His works between 1901 and 1906 are distinguished into 'Blue' and 'Rose' periods precisely because the tint attracts more attention than the colouring. Drawing preoccupied Picasso as an element of contour, gradation in the chiaroscuro, and formal proportion." (Lionello Venturi, Mostra di Pablo Picasso, catalogo ufficiale, Rome, 1953).
