Catalogue Note

The Constellations series (1940-1941) is the point of departure for a set of no less remarkable works where Miro’s prodigious inventiveness unfolds in a frenzy of experimentation. Jacques Dupin described perfectly the extreme and joyful artistic licence of these drawings made between 1942 and 1943: “All the variations of these pages turn around a unique theme, the Woman Bird Star, which is the title of a great number of works. It is always a variation on this theme of great simplicity, variations that are all the more rich, complex and disturbing as the theme retains this elementary simplicity. The woman, the stars and a few animals are figures that are both common and fantastic which lend themselves to the infinite combinations of the artist’s imagination.” (quoted in Miro, Martigny, Fondation Pierre Gianadda, 1997, p.106.)
