Sotheby’s Evening Sale of Modern & Post-War British Art brought strong prices across the board for an exciting array of fresh-to-market works. The sale was led by Sir Stanley Spencer’s rediscovered masterpiece, Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta: Punts by the River. Unseen in over half a century the work sold for an impressive £3,370,000. The sale saw staggering results for works by three of the biggest names of the Modern British Scene, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and Dame Barbara Hepworth, whose 1959 Spiral sold for £1,270,000. The sale saw further strong results for works by William Scott, Sir Winston Churchill, William Roberts, L.S. Lowry and Patrick Caulfield.
