Overview

RESULTS

The Modern & Post-War British Art auction achieved £10,481,500. The sale was led by a First World War masterpiece from 1914 by C.R.W. Nevinson, which sold for £1.9 million, an auction record for the artist and quadruple the previous record achieved last year. A further highlight was a recently-unveiled work by Sir Winston Churchill, which sold for £357,000. It is the last work he ever painted and was seen here for the first time since it was gifted to the artist’s bodyguard.

AUCTION DETAILS

Celebrating the very best in the British art scene over the past century, November’s sale of Modern & Post-War British Art is led by an exciting array of fresh-to-market works by some of the most sought after artists and sculptors of the period. Led by three masterworks by Britain’s most beloved artist L.S. Lowry, the sale also features Property from a Hampstead Collection – including C.R.W. Nevinson’s World War One masterpiece A Dawn, 1914 – together with Works from the Estate of Ann Jellicoe and Roger Mayne. The sale includes further works that chart the fascinating story of Modern British Art over the past century, from important early works by Henry Lamb, Eric Ravilious and Edward Wadsworth, through to mid-century masters Ben Nicholson and Dame Barbara Hepworth, and on to important contemporary artists such as Barry Flanagan and Jenny Saville.
