Overview

Our sale on 28 April boasts a fine selection of works on natural history, maps and atlases, and books, drawings and photographs relating to exploration and travel. Highlights include: a magnificent copy of Dupré’s Voyage à Athenes et à Constantinople; Shackleton’s Aurora Australis, the first book to be printed and bound in Antarctica; a nine-volume Dutch edition of Blaeu’s Atlas Major in a fine original vellum binding; and a superb copy of Bonelli’s sumptuous Hortus Romanus. Among the photographic lots there are three stand-out items: a magnificent large panorama of Moscow from 1867; the large format edition of Francis Frith’s celebrated photographs of Egypt; and a unique and comprehensive collection of early photographs of Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
