3 works in one volume, folio (383 x 237mm.), RULED IN RED, red initial-strokes, decorative flourishes in blue and red, more than 1,000 woodcut illustrations of animals, birds and fish with CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOUR, late sixteenth-century calf gilt over wooden boards, gilt arabesque centre- and corner-pieces, brass corner-pieces and clasps, spine gilt in compartments, traces of gauffering and gilding along edges, [Nissen ZBI 1552, 1555; Nissen Vögel 350; VD16 G1728, G1734, G1741], marginal paper repairs and tears to many leaves, Thierbuch: title-page somewhat soiled at edges with a few paper repairs, h6 torn at foot without loss, i1 and n2 torn at foot with loss of a few words, o1 slightly damaged at foot obscuring text, r3 with loss of a few letters, y6 torn with some loss, Vogelbuch: lower section of b5 torn away, rebacked retaining original spine, new endpapers, binding slightly rubbed and scraped, upper joint cracking, lacking both straps

Catalogue Note

A fine collection of Gesner's works with contemporary colour, in a once-magnificent binding. Gesner's original Latin editions had been published shortly before by Froschauer, and these first German translations were reprinted by the end of the century.
