The sale achieved a total of £1,294,563 and there were 16 new artist records set. The top lot was Georgy Gurianov’s Self-Portrait of 1990 which reached £143,000, and there was strong bidding for the collection of works by Czech artist Běla Kolářová.
AUCTION DETAILS
Contemporary East will feature paintings, photography and sculpture from 1945 to today by leading artists from Central and Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. Among the artists included are Judit Reigl, Karel Malich, Ivan Kožarić, Komar and Melamid, and Vladimir Weisberg. There is a strong selection of vintage photographs and collages by Běla Kolářová and Dóra Maurer, and a rare group of nine works by Polish designer Roman Cieślewicz, led by his striking 1968 design Cassius Clay.
