Sotheby’s New York auction of Photographs on 7 October totaled $3,280,375. Leading the auction was Robert Mapplethorpe’s iconic work, Man in Polyester Suit, which sold well above its estimate for $478,000 (est. $250,000 - 350,000) – the highest price achieved in this week’s Photographs sales in New York. Other highlights of the sale included an exemplary, early print of Alfred Stieglitz’s portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe that sold for $212,500 (est. $100,000 - 200,000), and Tina Modotti’s 1929 Campesinos Reading El Machete, which sold for $225,000 (est. $200,000 - 300,000).
