Sotheby's 4 June sale of Master Paintings brought a total of $4,346,875, including buyer's premium. Leading the auction, Antonio Joli's magnificent Rome, A View of the Tiber with the Castel Sant'Angelo and Saint Peter's Basilica, featured above, sold well above its pre-sale estimate.
Antonio Joli’s magnificent view of Rome leads the June 4 Master Paintings sale in New York. Two of Rome's most famous and remarkable structures—Castel Sant'Angelo and the Basilica of Saint Peter's—tower over the rest of the Eternal City, as figures gently go about their day. Other highlights include Gaetano Gandolfi’s Holy Family, which until recently was only known through a red chalk preparatory drawing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a group of 17th century paintings from the collection of Dr. Hilary Koprowski and Dr. Irena Koprowska, and property from the collection of Dr. Claus Virch. On offer will also be paintings from two highly regarded museums: the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
