Description

  • Adam and Eve
  • oil on marouflaged panel

Provenance

Private collection, Germany.

Condition

The panel is comprised of four individual boards brought together by three vertical joins. There is retouching along each of the joins that extends no more than 1 inch away from the join itself. UV light reveals various scattered retouches in the bodies of Adam and Eve. These are more generally applied in Adams face, torso, and left thigh, and similarly within Eve's legs, torso, shoulder and to a lesser degree in her face. The background and fruit within the composition, as well as the sky, have relatively few retouches and are in quite good state. Overall there is a somewhat milky varnish that could be replaced. The retouches throughout the composition are not overly disturbing to the naked eye though a few of them could certainly be adjusted with great success. In a carved and painted wooden frame.
