Established collectors from across Asia competed with new entrants to this market for works by some of the region’s most sought-after artists. Sotheby's was honoured to be able to bring to sale a range of attractive offerings from private collections, all of which performed extremely well. In this increasingly sophisticated market, collectors are willing to push past pre-sale estimates to pursue coveted pieces of art, in particular works with impeccable provenance and those fresh to the market. Sotheby’s is proud to have played a role in stimulating the field's continued growth by featuring new artists and, in turn, attracting new collectors from the region.
Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings Day Sale embodies the spirit and creative energy that is characteristic of the region. Hendra Gunawan’s intimate work Portret Diri dan Anak (Self-Portrait with Child), and Chen Wen Hsi’s Boat Dock provide insight into the Southeast Asia of the past. While contemporary artists including M. Irfan and Rudi Mantofani add a fresh voice to the grouping.
