Catalogue Note
The triptych portrays the experience of divine suffering and earthly redemption, bringing together emblems of faith and human frailty. At the very centre is the motif of a bleeding red rose pierced by thorns and crowned by the icon of a golden burning flame. Understood as a sacred heart, the symbol represents Christ’s enduring love for humanity as often depicted within religious contexts. However, by transforming the heart into a rose, and placing it on the chest of an ordinary mortal, Esquillo attempts to portray the divinity within us. In Philippine culture, the motif resembles the loob of one’s inner self; and in the lexis of psychology, the term can be understood as the internal dimension of a person’s identity. The ephemeral rose, punctured by its own vine, is bleeding with sin and restrained by the finitude of time. Within the pictorial space are the multiple reflections of the figure’s own body. The composition is perhaps Esquillo’s effort in transporting us into the mindscape of the protagonist. The painting henceforth represents a sense of inner flowering, which the artist likens to the mortal experience of inevitable fall and eventual salvation.
