Sotheby's the sale Contemporary Curated Featuring Works From The Collection Of Joni Gordon Of Newspace Gallery brought a total of $28,267,065, soaring over the pre-sale estimate of $15.8/22.7 million with 80% of lots sold. There was significant participation from Asia and Latin America as well as from the US and over 10% of bids were made online. The sale was led by the most important group of works by Vija Celmins to ever appear at auction, these included the seminal painting Burning Plane from 1965 which doubled the high estimate of $1.2 million to sell for $3,413,000. Other memorable results from the Joni Gordon collection included the early John Baldessari work 18th and Highland, National City which sold for $509,000 (est. $180/250,000) as well as a series of pieces by John McLaughlin. Elsewhere in the sale Philip Guston’s Magician's Table fetched $653,000 (est. $250/350,000) and an Untitled Keith Haring from 1988 sold for $2,741,000 – one of the highest prices achieved for the artist at auction.

Sotheby’s is thrilled to present GOOD TO GO: Property from the Collection of Joni Gordon of Newspace Gallery, as part of the Contemporary Curated auction. Highlighting the collection are seminal works by West-Coast artists, Vija Celmins, John McLaughlin, Ed Ruscha, Llyn Foulkes, and John Baldessari. Also included in the group are rare examples by lesser-known artists championed by Gordon, including Joe Goode, John Altoon, Wallace Berman, and Tony Berlant. Sotheby’s will also feature important Post-War works by Salvatore Scarpitta, Alexander Calder, and Larry Rivers as well as stand-out lots by cutting-edge Contemporary artists like Sterling Ruby, Nick Darmstaedter, and KAWS. Property from Ahead of the Curve: The Sender Collection will be offered once again, headlined by works from Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, and Wangechi Mutu.
