Collections totalled £1,045,780, led by the strong performance of a private Milanese collection. Several of the Chinese works of art from this group far exceeded their pre-sale estimates, the highlight being a rare set of Zhou Dynasty bronze which sold for £52,500. There were strong results for tapestries too and the magnificent classical tapestry depicting the story of Antony and Cleopatra realised £40,000 against a low of £25,000.
Sotheby’s Collections sales are renowned for bringing together eclectic groups of furniture, decorative and fine art from private collections and our autumn instalment is no exception. Highlights include a group from Italy, which offers a colourful array of Chinese objects alongside Italian classics; a charming collection of early oak and English Country furniture adds a folk flavour; whilst a rich assortment of tapestries provide a feast of flora and fauna for the eyes.
