RESULTS

The third part of the Library of an English Bibliophile sale achieved £659,714. The top lot for this part was a first edition of James Joyce's Dubliners, which made £86,500 against a pre-sale estimate of £70,000-90,000.

OVERVIEW

This is the third sale from the very distinguished library of an English Bibliophile, following our two previous sales held in October 2010 in London and October 2011 in New York. This selection focuses on a fine collection of Victorian triple-deckers by well-known authors such as George Eliot, Wilkie Collins, Anthony Trollope, Charlotte Brontë, Thomas Hardy, R.D. Blackmore, George Gissing, Henry James and many others, along with rare editions by several neglected women writers of the period. Nearly all of these folios are preserved, quite unusually, in fine condition in their original cloth bindings. These noteworthy works are joined by great individual highlights in literature, psychology and economics, including the Shakespeare Second Folio of 1632, two of the limited edition issues of James Joyce’s Ulysses, the first edition of Sigmund Freud’s Die Traumdeutung (The Interpretation of Dreams) and the first English edition of Machiavelli’s The Prince.
